Metallurgical coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate two open cut and three underground metallurgical coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, every year producing millions of tonnes of the highest quality hard coking coal for this purpose.

Job Description

Health Safety & Hygiene Superintendent – Aquilla Mine

Reporting to the Safety Health and Environment Manager, you will assist with the delivery of the Anglo American Coal’s Safety systems on site. This is achieved through effective leadership of the safety team to implement safety and health plans, monitor key performance measure and ensure continuous improvement with an overall aim of achieving Zero Harm.

This role will be rewarding and varied and will include the following:

  • Assist with developing and implementing the Safety & Health /TZAP and/ or companywide initiatives to achieve specific business goals and identify and recommend opportunities to increase the efficiency or effectiveness of S&H service provision.
  • Maintain the site Safety and Health Management System (SHMS) and ensure compliance in line with legislative & Anglo American Coal requirements including regular audits and review.
  • Develop and implement occupational health, hygiene and wellbeing systems that support compliance with legislation and mining best practice.
  • Supervise and manage Paramedics and the services they provide, including injury management and fitness for duty management


To be successful in this role, you will have the following:

  • Tertiary Qualifications in Safety (or a related discipline)
  • Any required competencies for ‘Supervisors’ as determined and recognised by the Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee.
  • Experience in an underground coal mining environment
